A Tactical Survivor-like Where Judgment, Not Luck, Wins
On top of the survivor-like genre's low fatigue and dopamine, we added a layer of strategy that lets you control randomness.
Rise From Ashes is a game where how you make use of the current situation matters more than luck.
Survivor-like
Rise From Ashes set out to preserve the survivor-like genre's greatest strengths: low fatigue and the thrill of mowing down enemies.
The player shouldn't have to focus on complex controls.
On top of that, the joy of growing while clearing countless enemies, and the fun of testing your own build. Bringing out the genre's essential fun to the fullest was our first goal.
Auto Chess
Existing survivor-likes are intuitive and fun.
But their progression mostly stays a simple repetition of choices. Pick a skill, fight, pick another skill. There is plenty of fun in watching, but the fun of designing is relatively lacking.
Rise From Ashes wanted to fill that gap. What inspired us along the way was auto chess and TFT.
- Auto chess units → skills
- Synergy of unit combinations → synergy of skill combinations
Through the act of crafting, the player acquires and strengthens a variety of skills, freely completing a deck of their own. And with that personal skill deck, they step into real-time combat.
Design
The in-game visuals of Rise From Ashes are rendered in black and white.
Inspired by black-and-white manga, we pursued a look that sets us apart from other games. The in-game screen is drawn in black and white like the interior pages of a comic, while the UI layered on top uses a bold, vivid color style like a comic book cover.
In the end, we wanted to create an experience where the player isn't simply launching a game, but opening a single volume of a comic.
Roguelike
The heart of the roguelike is randomness.
Randomness you cannot control, and the act of using the tools given in that moment to gradually turn the random into something you can.
That is exactly where Rise From Ashes places its focus.
- Which skill will you choose
- Which synergy will you aim for
- Which stat will you raise
These choices stack into a single build, and in every different situation a new strategy and a new experience is born.
The feeling Rise From Ashes wants to create is simple.
"I got lucky and won."
not
"I won because I built it well."
